Overview:

Under general supervision, the POH PACU Registered Nurse (RN) applies elements of the nursing process in the provision of professional nursing care to all patients in accordance with accepted standards of practice for Pre-Operative Holding and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (POH/PACU). The staff RN is responsible for assessing the patients individual care needs and developing a plan of care based on this assessment. The RN is responsible for the facilitation of patient care delivery by effectively collaborating with other health care providers on an intra- and interdepartmental basis.

.8 FTE averaging 32 hours per week. One 12hr shift, Two 10hr shifts. Varying days Monday-Friday.

$3000 sign on bonus

Essential Functions:

  • Assesses the health status of the patient in order to develop an individualized plan of care by collection, categorizing and interpreting data (physical and psychosocial) from documented information, observation, patient/family interview and other health care team members.

  • Develops a nursing care plan based on the assessment of the patient that included nursing diagnosis, patient goals and nursing interventions necessary to achieve these goals.

  • Implements the nursing care plan to provide optimal individualized care for the patient.

  • Instructs the patient and family to assist the patient, procedure and operative site correspond.

  • Plans, supervises and assists with the transfer of the patient to protect the patient and personnel from injury.

  • Positions the patient for POH/PACU while maximizing patient safety and comfort.

  • Establishes and maintains a clean environment to reduce the potential for infection by applying the principles of antisepsis, decontamination, disinfection, sanitation, sterilization and environmental monitoring.

  • Establishes and maintains a field to reduce potential for infection by teaching and supervising the patient regarding post operative care.

  • Establishes and maintains a safe environment to protect the patient and the health care team by monitoring the patient (physiologically and psychologically) and the environment and by implementing safety procedures.

  • Coordinates support services needed during POH/PACU by anticipating and communicating patient and surgical team needs.

  • Communicates information to patient/family.

  • Organizes and coordinates supplies, equipment, and team members to maintain an efficient, effective and safe postoperative environment through ongoing patient and situation assessment, priority setting, procurement of supplies and arrangement of equipment, by teaching, directing, communicating and collaborating with health care team members and support service personnel.

  • Communicates information to patient to promote continuity of care.

  • Evaluates effectiveness of nursing care to determine degree of goal attainment by comparing patient outcomes with patient goals.

  • Contributes to discharge plan.

  • Selects and executes appropriate methods for cleaning, packaging, sterilizing and disinfecting to ensure patient safety by applying the principles of sterilization and disinfection and by following packaging guidelines set by regulation agencies and manufacturers.

  • Evaluates products to determine their safety, effectiveness, use and cost effectiveness.

  • Executes nursing activities to provide life support in an emergency situation by taking appropriate action and/or providing direction/assistance to health care team members.

  • Initiates appropriate behaviors unique to pre-op holding and post-anesthesia care unit.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum: Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing

  • Minimum: Current WA State RN license.

  • Minimum: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (AHA) or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (American Red Cross)

  • Minimum: Knowledge of meds used pre-op, intra-op and post-op, including IV conscious sedation; knowledge of function and use of patient monitoring systems.

  • Minimum: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association.

  • Preferred: Pediatric Life Support (PALS) certifications

  • Preferred: CPAN

Experience:

  • Minimum: 1 year of recent hospital or urgent care experience with IV skills

  • Preferred: 5 or more years of experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Computer literate.

  • Ability to type 25 wpm.

  • Basic Life Support for healthcare providers.

  • Manual dexterity to use/handle equipment and instruments.

  • Skilled in phlebotomy and I.V. therapy.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to concurrently perform multiple tasks.
